Piqua is an old canal and manufacturing town on the Great Miami, and its lawns reflect that history more than its agriculture. The housing stock skews old, the lots are often compact, and a great deal of the city was built when nobody was thinking about subsoil compaction.

The Great Miami runs through Piqua, and the Miami and Erie Canal ran alongside it. How to Tell If You Are on Canal Fill

The Miami and Erie Canal ran through Piqua for the better part of a century, and the corridor it occupied has been dug, filled, rerouted and built over ever since. A meaningful number of properties near that alignment are sitting on made ground rather than native soil, and it behaves differently.

Fill has a few tells. Dig a hole a foot down and look for material that does not belong — brick fragments, cinders, coal ash, gravel in a layer, or an abrupt change to a completely different soil color and texture with no gradual transition. Native soil grades; fill has seams.

It is also usually dense, because it was placed and compacted rather than deposited naturally, and it can be unpredictable across a single lot. We have seen Piqua yards where one corner behaves like normal clay and another twenty feet away behaves like a gravel road.

For aeration this mostly means expectations rather than problems. Tines occasionally hit something solid and pull a broken core. Results can vary across the lawn. And the lawn may genuinely need more years of annual aeration than a comparable property on native ground.

Piqua has compact residential lots, and compaction has a consequence on a small lot that people rarely connect to the soil: the water has to go somewhere, and on a tight parcel it goes onto the hard surfaces.

Probably. Cut a wedge of turf and measure the brown fibrous band between the green grass and the soil. Under half an inch is healthy. Over three quarters and it is causing problems. Old bluegrass lawns build thatch readily.
