It relieves the drought stress at the crest and the saturation at the base simultaneously, because both were symptoms of water moving instead of infiltrating. 1960s and 70s Subdivisions

This is among the most straightforwardly improvable conditions we encounter. The compacted layer is shallow, continuous and mechanical in origin, which means core aeration reaches it directly rather than having to work down through several feet of anything.

The trees planted when those subdivisions went in are now fifty or sixty years old, which is exactly the age at which they start seriously competing with turf for water and light.
