Springfield is the largest city we serve outside Dayton, and it has one of the oldest and most varied housing stocks in the region. Grand nineteenth-century homes, dense early-twentieth-century neighborhoods, post-war subdivisions, and newer development on the edges — each with a different lawn story underneath.
Springfield Lawns: Soil and Bedrock
The land around Springfield is glacial till with clay-rich subsoil, cut through by the Mad River and Buck Creek. Both corridors carry substantial sand and gravel outwash, and there is enough of it locally that the area has a long history of aggregate extraction. Lawns on those deposits drain fast and dry out early; lawns on till hold water and compact.
The complication specific to Clark County is limestone close to the surface in places, which pushes soil pH upward. Cool-season grasses want a pH around 6.0 to 7.0. Past roughly 7.5, iron and some other nutrients become chemically unavailable even though they are present in the soil.
That produces a lawn that yellows between the leaf veins while the veins stay green — which looks like a nitrogen shortage, so people apply more nitrogen, which does not help. The OSU Extension office for Clark County can point you at a testing lab, and most garden centers sell mail-in kits. What matters is what you ask them to report.
- pH. The headline number. Cool-season grasses want roughly 6.0 to 7.0. Above about 7.5, iron and several other nutrients become chemically unavailable even though they are physically present.
- Phosphorus and potassium levels. Useful for deciding what fertilizer actually makes sense rather than guessing.
- Organic matter percentage. A good indicator of overall soil health and how much biological activity you have.
- Buffer pH or lime requirement, if pH is off. This tells you how much correction the soil will actually need.
If the test comes back with a high pH and yellowing between the leaf veins, that is a chemistry problem and aeration will not fix it. If it comes back reasonable and your screwdriver still will not go into the ground, that is a compaction problem, and that is what we do.
The Big Old Lawns
Springfield has grand nineteenth-century housing on generous lots, and those lawns are among the oldest continuously maintained turf anywhere in our service area. They present a specific combination.
The soil has been walked on, mown, and driven over for well over a century. The tree canopy is genuinely mature — not subdivision trees that have grown up, but original plantings that are now very large. And the original grading, where anyone can determine it, was done long before subsoil compaction was a concept.
These lawns respond well to aeration, and the improvement in the areas around large trees is often the most noticeable part, because that is where root competition is fiercest and where opening the soil does the most good.
What we will not do is promise uniformity. A hundred-year-old lawn under a hundred-year-old maple is never going to look like a golf fairway, and it should not. Thicker, greener, and considerably more drought tolerant than it currently is — that is achievable and worth doing.
The Post-War East and North Sides
Away from the historic districts, Springfield has extensive post-war residential development, and those lawns tell a different story: efficient site preparation, thin topsoil returned over graded subsoil, modest lots, and seventy years of settling since.
This is the most straightforwardly fixable lawn condition we encounter. The compacted layer is shallow, continuous, and mechanical in origin, which means core aeration reaches it directly.
On lots this size we pay particular attention to the high-traffic strips — the route from the driveway to the door, the gate approach, the worn line along a fence. Concentrated traffic produces the most severe compaction on any property, and extra passes over those areas is usually the highest-value part of the visit.

If the yellowing is between the leaf veins while the veins themselves stay green, that is a classic high-pH iron problem, not a nitrogen shortage. Will aeration fix my soil pH?
No, and we would rather tell you that than take the job. pH correction is a chemistry problem, usually addressed with elemental sulfur over time. That is outside what we do.
Is my old lawn worth aerating, or should I start over?
Almost always worth aerating. Renovation on a large old lot is expensive and disruptive, and an established lawn has decades of root system and soil biology that a new one does not. Aeration plus overseeding improves what you have at a fraction of the cost.
How long do the soil plugs stay on the lawn?
One to three weeks depending on rain. Do not rake them up — they carry soil microbes back across the surface and they break down on their own. A single mowing once they have dried will finish the job.
